Educator Award to NHH Professor William F. Messier

NHH Honorary Professor and Adjunct Professor at NHH, William F. Messier, has been awarded the American Accounting Association 2015 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

The 2015 AAA Outstanding Accounting Educator Award was presented on 11 August at the Association's Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The criteria for the Award (sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers) are based on contributions to accounting education from scholarly endeavors in teaching and research over a sustained period of time through educational innovation, excellence in teaching, publications, and research guidance to graduate students. In receiving the award Messier specifically referred to his experiences from more than two decades of teaching and research at NHH.

Strong influence on auditing at NHH

"William F. Messier has had a decisive role in establishing auditing as a research field at NHH and in the academic development of NHH faculty", says Aasmund Eilifsen, Professor at the Department of Accounting, Auditing and Law at NHH. He has worked closely with him since Messier first came to NHH in the early 1990s.

"I am very pleased that he has been rewarded this recognition by such a prestigious association", Aasmund Eilifsen states. "Messier has had a strong influence on the quality of NHH's Master's Programme of Accounting and Auditing (MRR) and has made important contributions to NHH's PhD programme. He possesses a unique ability to engage, encourage, and create a dynamic learning environment."

William F. Messier is currently Kenneth and Tracy Knauss Endowed Chair in Accounting, Department of Accounting, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has been Adjunct Professor at NHH since 1992. In 2011 Messier was appointed Honorary Professor for his longstanding efforts for NHH.

William F. Messier Jr

William F. Messier Jr has made extensive research contributions and pioneered a range of research areas in accounting and auditing, including modelling of auditor judgments, expert systems and decision support systems, decision aids in auditing, recency effects in auditor judgments and the review process and engagement quality review.

Professor Messier has continued to publish in the very top international journals over a 30 year period and has had a most significant impact on the literature and research in accounting and auditing field. He is currently involved in a number of research projects with NHH faculty.

Messier served as the Academic Member of the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board and he is a Past-Editor of Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory and formerly President of the Auditing Section.
