The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has Norwegian and foreign members, as well as honorary members. It has 250 seats for Norwegian members and 160 seats for foreign members. A seat becomes vacant on the death of the holder or when a member has reached the age of 70. Only members of the Academy are entitled to propose candidates for membership, which is based solely on the candidates' scientific achievements.

The Academy is divided into two divisions; The Natural Sciences Division and The Humanities and Social Sciences Division.

The Academy acts as a national contact body both within the individual scientific disciplines and between these, and represents Norwegian science vis-à-vis foreign academies and other international scientific organizations. It was founded in 1857.
